Halloween Ideas – Frankenstein Costumes

Probably the most recognisable character from horror films has to be Frankenstein’s Monster. This makes a great subject for creating a party costume, and especially for Halloween. There are an enormous amount of costumes based on Frankenstein’s Monster, from jokey to downright scary.

Frankenstein Costumes for Kids

Children love dressing up and pretending to be different characters, and the Frankenstein costume character provides a great opportunity for their acting prowess to really shine. Often bedecked in green and black, the Frankenstein costume accentuates a large stiff body with overly large boots. Of course the head is typically attached to the body with a bolt running laterally through the neck, and often the face would be tinged in green with a square forehead and black hair. Rubber face masks are very common, or one can simply be creative with face paints and make-up. There are so many depictions of Frankenstein on the internet that it is very easy to find inspiration if you prefer to use make up or face paint. I remember when kids came around tricking and treating, wearing face-masks, that we couldn’t tell who was who… A bit frustrating for us adults, though no doubt great fun for the kids. But of course rubber masks have their draw-backs too… It’s difficult to stuff all those chocs and candy in and drink down gallons of green juice, so my personal choice is to use make-up and face paint, though of course it may be necessary to do touch-up repairs to the make up at times during the party.

Frankenstein Costumes for Adults

Adults are of course big kids… at least the ones who go to Halloween parties are. And I’m sure that every adult who dresses up for a fancy dress or Halloween party has every bit as much fun. After all, we all like an excuse to let our hair down and act irresponsibly. Dressing up allows one to hide behind a different persona, losing the normal boundaries of sensible adult-hood and letting out all those frustrations in a party frenzy. A typical costume for Frankenstein’s partner would be a bride. Inputting Monster Bride into the Search on the Buycostumes web site brings up a variety of results. I particularly like the costume in the picture below. When viewed on the buycostumes web site, if you mouse-over the small picture, you get an enlarged image of the focused area on the right. Very cool. Check it out and you’ll see what I mean. Halloween – A Brief History

When looking to buy costumes for Halloween, it is fun to get some historical background to this ancient festival, to give inspiration for getting into the Halloween spirit (no pun intended).

Buy Costumes Explains – Early Halloween

Dating back to the Celts, around 2,000 years ago, the festival of Halloween is derived from the ancient Druid festival known as Samhain (the original spelling being Samuin which was pronounced sow-in or sow-an). This marked the end of the summer and harvest, being the lighter part of the year, leading into the darker part. At this point it was believed that on the eve of their new year (November the 1st) the boundary between the spirit world and this world became thin or distorted, allowing ghosts and spirits to invade our world and cause trouble.

Celts were the inhabitants of ancient Britain and Northern France (Gaul), and many were driven to the extremities of Britain, such as the Scottish Highlands, Wales, Cornwall (in the south west) and Ireland, where they remain today.

During the festival of Samhain, the harmless ancestors from the spirit world were invited home, whilst the nasty ones were sent packing, frightened away by people wearing scary costumes. Some people believed that they avoided trouble by disguising themselves as evil beings. (So if you want to send the ghousts and gouls packing then Buy Costumes has the answer – lol.)

Druids (Celtic priests) considered it to be easier to predict the future at this time of year, which gave comfort to the Celts during the winter months, who of course were always at the mercy of the weather. Sacrificial offerings of animals and crops were made by Celts, and were burned on bonfires lit by the Druids. The name bonfire derives from bone fire. Sometimes there were two bonfires lit and people and their livestock would walk between them as a ritual for cleansing. Then the flames would be used to light individual fires in the homes of the Celts, and bones would be thrown into the flames.

The Romans invaded the lands inhabited by Celts, and ruled for four hundred years. They brought with them their own festivals, combining their celebration of the passing of the dead, named Feralia, (celebrated in late October), plus the honouring of the Roman goddess of trees and fruit, Pomona, thus creating a new festival. And with the onset of Christianity, Pope Boniface IV decreed that November the 1st should be named All Saints Day in an attempt to replace the Celtic celebrations with a Christian holiday. All Saints Day translated into the old middle English name, All Hallows or Hallowmans, so the night before logically became All Hallows Even, and hence Halloween.

Around the turn of the 1st millennium AD, a new church holiday was created for the 2nd November, honouring the dead, and was named All Souls Day, after which the three festivals of Hallowmans, All Saints and All Souls Day became known as Hallowmas.

Costumes for Parties – Present-Day

In more recent times – like within the last two to three hundred years, Halloween crossed the Atlantic Ocean, initially facing resistance from the Protestant Church, though it was slowly integrated with Native Indian influences . Further changes occurred following the influx into America by Irish settlers escaping the famous potato famine in the latter half of the 1800s, and the practice of Trick or Treating derived from people going door-to-door asking for food or money.
